Kenya Baker was born in Detroit, Michigan. She spent most of her childhood and adult life in Dayton, Ohio. She always possessed a strong love for education and community. Mrs. Baker holds a Bachelor of Science from Wilberforce University and a Master of Science in Education from the University of Dayton. She served as a teacher in the urban community for over 15 years. During her tenure in the classroom, she witnessed first hand the food desert of West Dayton. At hand she is one of the leaders in the movement of all movements fittingly dubbed, “Gem City Market, the Movement”. The Gem City Market stands to erect a 5.2 million dollar building and furnish high quality healthy foods to west Dayton residents. These residents are considered to live in one of the biggest food deserts in the country. From small focus groups in 2015 to now over 2000 members, Gem City Market has shattered the ceiling of membership growth nationally. Memberships are currently $50 for anyone living in the target area of 45402, 45405, 45406, 45416, 45417 and 45426. Baker is now developing “The Revolution Co-op” to educate west side residents on how to maintain the environment. She is spearheading multiple initiatives to institute Community Land Trusts to counteract the possibility of gentrification which could displace inner city residents in massive numbers.
