Chairman of Surgery
Sean J. Barnett, MD, MS, FACS, FAAP is the current Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and the Chairman of Surgery, Department of Surgery at Dayton Children’s Hospital. He also serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery, Department of Surgery, Boonshsoft School of Medicine. He is a graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine with a Master’s Degree in Human Anatomy and a Doctorate of Medicine.

Dr. Barnett completed a General Surgical Residency, Fellowship in Surgical Infectious Disease and completed his coursework without thesis towards a PhD in Cancer Biology at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. He subsequently completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where he served as a staff pediatric surgeon for 5 years prior to moving to Dayton Children’s.

He has served as the chair of the value analysis and equipment and standards committees at both hospitals. He was also instrumental in the development of innovation ventures program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Dr. Barnett is a founding member of Ascend Innovations and its previous chief medical officer and president. He is also the current committee chairmen of the new technologies committee of the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) and is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

He has worked with numerous companies including AMT refining their gastrostomy tube designs as well as Storz Endosurgery with the development of a new innovative laparoscopic pyloromyotomy knife that has just reached the market. Dr. Barnett also serves on the technical advisory board for Xact Medical, Inc based in Springboro. He brings a wealth of knowledge in the medical and surgical realms extrapolating into medical device design and subsequent commercialization.
